Four Seasons with Arlington Senior Babe Ruth: The Baseball Landscape for the Year AheadUpdatedTuesday November 17, 2020 byBeth Jones.
What a year! There continue to be unprecedented and incredible disruptions to everyone's lives and schedules due to the Coronavirus pandemic (and plenty of stress related to other political and social events). Restrictions and limitations from the Commonwealth and the County continue to dramatically impact youth sports. In an effort to help our community navigate around these challenges, this announcement provides an outline of ASBR's preliminary plans for baseball in the upcoming months.
First, thank you to the coaches, players, umpires and volunteers who contributed to a successful Fall season. By following safety protocols, and maintaining a smart and safe environment, we completed a full baseball season with a record number of players in the Fall program. The Clemente and Robinson Divisions and the Senators program established a schedule through which the players got a lot of fresh air, exercise, and competitive and often exciting baseball with their friends. The ASBR Board was thrilled to see the community come together at the baseball diamond.
If we maintain our focus on safety, we have an opportunity to continue to play ball. We plan to expand the Fall season with a brief outdoor Winter program. For all those registered for Summer or Fall baseball, we anticipate pick-up games and/or outdoor practices with our professional coaches. Weather permitting, we will offer this program through at least the end of December. We will likely manage participation through a sign-up genius.
In previous years we offered winter training sessions at the indoor baseball facility at Barcroft. However, we do not anticipate the County will permit us to broadly offer indoor winter training sessions to all participants in the house leagues. It is too soon to say whether the County will ultimately permit the use of the indoor baseball training facilities for more limited winter workouts for the Senators.
Early Spring - March 2021
We plan to adjust our offerings to accommodate the revised Spring sports schedule planned by the Virginia High School League for our high school age players.
We intend to offer an early Spring program of practices and games. The season will start in early March and be completed before the high schools’ currently scheduled return to baseball on April 12. This league will be offered to players who intend to try out for JV and Varsity programs. We anticipate that the program will be Arlington focused; but we will likely schedule games with other nearby neighborhood community programs and/or the NVTBL if it establishes an early Spring league. (We will continue to offer baseball beginning in mid-March for our 13-year-old players and non-high school players as in previous years.)
ASBR anticipates offering its traditional spring 'house league' program beginning on March 20 (although it may start later) through June 10. As in previous years, ASBR will offer baseball, grouped by age, to all interested 13-18 year olds.
ASBR plans to form competitive travel teams in 2021 for the 13u, 14u, 15u, and 16-18u age groups. We anticipate that these “All Star” teams will compete beginning in June, with the season expected to end by July 30. We expect the teams to compete in the traditional Senior Babe Ruth All Stars trail, and additional tournaments and NVTBL league games.
